Oncofertility (Fertility Preservation Prior to Cancer Treatment)

Oncofertility & Medical Fertility Preservation

Oncofertility refers to the process of preserving a patient’s fertility prior to beginning cancer or other medical treatment that could negatively impact the reproductive system. After receiving a cancer diagnosis, many patients are advised by their oncologist to begin treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy. While these treatments can be effective against different types of cancer, they are also known to have a negative impact on both female and male fertility. Because of this, oncologists are now having conversations with patients about their family planning goals and advising the use of fertility preservation, such as egg, sperm, and embryo freezing, prior to beginning cancer treatment.

Fertility preservation can also be used preemptively if there is a family or personal history of cancer (especially ovarian cancer) or the presence of other high-risk conditions, such as endometriosis or a family history of premature menopause.

Preserving Fertility While Preparing for Cancer Treatment

Thanks to advances in fertility preservation, men and women no longer have to fear what life-saving treatment could mean for their ability to grow their families. Because cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can put a person’s fertility at risk, it is important that family planning and fertility preservation be considered as soon as possible before beginning cancer treatment.

Due to the often urgent timing of cancer treatment, the team at RMA of New York at CareMount expedites this fertility care process. Oncofertility patients are often seen same-day or next-day in order to begin treatment as quickly as possible. Being a part of the CareMount network allows us to provide coordinated and expedited care between the fertility and oncology physician teams.

Fertility preservation can be completed within weeks in most cases and, if needed, can be scheduled around cancer diagnostic procedures and treatments. Once fertility preservation is complete, your frozen eggs, sperm, or embryos will be safely stored until ready for use.

Financial Assistance Programs and Insurance Coverage

Our financial team assists patients in understanding the costs associated with oncofertility treatment, and your dedicated financial counselor will personally walk you through your individual coverage and benefits. Additionally, our partnership with the LIVESTRONG organization provides patients with reduced fertility preservation treatment costs. Our goal is to ensure that our patients have as many financial resources available to them as possible.

Your Safety Comes First

When determining whether or not cancer treatments can be delayed, your oncology team will consider several factors, including your age, the type and stage of cancer, and the recommended course of treatment. Communication between a patient and their oncologist must come first, where your doctor can relay any concerns about whether fertility preservation can be conducted in conjunction with cancer treatment. If it’s possible and safe for fertility preservation to occur before or alongside treatment, the oncofertility team at RMA of New York at CareMount is ready to provide any assistance necessary to help you preserve and safeguard your dreams of having a family.
